Can an old version of Applecare be used on a new ACD?

My friend has an unused "Applecare for Displays" that has a different item number than the version on Apple's website. I assume it's an older version. Do you think I would have a problem activating it on a 27" ACD? Do they tie Applecare versions to certain monitors? Thanks everyone.
