Can an unlocked iPhone4s(650$) be bought and used on T-Mobile?

Would I just have to buy it unlocked through Apple and then proceed to activate it with T-Mobile?

Will there be any limitations for the 4S on T-Mobile?

Yes it can be bought and used on TMO (I assume we are talking USA).

You will not get visual voicemail.

You will not get 3G data (in the vast majority of markets).

So no unlocked is needed?

Because one carrier store is telling me that he would have to buy an iPhone4s and then unlock it but buying an Apple unlocked iPhone4s requires no unlocking of any sort?

Who said no unlock is needed? If you are talking about TMO USA, you need the phone to be unlocked to operate on the network. Regardless, you will not get 3G data or visual voicemail.

You need it unlocked ...

I'd buy an unlocked phone directly from Apple, since unlocking it other ways can cause trouble when it is time for updates.

I got that from Apple's website

"The unlocked iPhone works only on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S."

So to get it to work on T-Mobile, the unlocked iPhone 4s still has to be unlocked??

* I meant no unlocking is needed after buying the unlocked iPhone4s

Yes. U.S. GSM iPhones are locked to AT&T, unless you buy it unlocked from Apple.

So I might as well buy an Apple unlocked iPhone4s from an Apple Store, bring it to a T-Mobile shop and activate it with a 2 year contract right there on the spot.

That will work? I'm not worried about edge since wifi is sufficient

Correct...I still don't see how people can stay on edge though.

I wouldn't sign a contract if you can avoid it, since they aren't subsidising your phone, but yes, that will work.

Unlocked means unlocked, my friend. You cannot unlock something that is already unlocked. :)

Alright thanks for the help everyone, going to sign contract to get other phones subsidized on a family plan
