Yes. In order to unlock an iPhone you have to jailbreak first, so you should preserve your baseband(01.59.00) using TinyUmbrella. Jailbreak with limera1n. Then you can unlock using ultrasn0w.

Baseband: Based band is the name given to the modem (radio) firmware, this is the code that control the hardware that allow the phone to communicate with the network, it hold the network stack (think about the language that the Network towers speaks).

Just as you update driver on your computer for your Printer, or your mouse or any device, the Firmware on the modem of the phone need to be update from time to time (to address bug fixes, to increase performance, to add new features, etc).

Yes there are several version of the baseband for each phone, Unlocking the baseband is a bit harder to do than jailbreaking (since actually jailbreaking [root access] is required in order to even start working on an baseband unlock). For this reason usually the most recent baseband is no unlock. Older baseband are unlock since hackers had lot more time to work on it.

To answer more of your question, you need to tell us what baseband version you are running, even when you are on 4.0.2, if you (or previous owner of the iDevice) updated to for example 4.1 at any point and them downgrade back to 4.0.1 you will have the newer baseband.

AS i said, all depend where are you "getting" it from.....

From Apple? Doubt you will get a phone with 4.0.2 still, but if you are lucky them yes, factory 4.0.2 will come with an unlockable baseband

From ebay, craiglist? no way to know, someone could have update to 4.1 (which update the baseband to a 02.xx version that is NOT currently unlockable) and them you will be stuck, or maybe it have always had 4.0.2 and you may be fine.

Should be fine if they state it was never upgraded. It sounds suspicious that someone would want to get rid of a brand new iPhone. Make sure you check the baseband before you purchase to ensure it can be unlocked.

quick question

 Hey i have an iphone 4 thats on 4.0.2 and modem firmware 01.59.00. I installed ultrasn0w successfully does that mean its unlocked? i dont really want to cut my sim card to test it and it ends up not working.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

I got my iPhone replaced on the 11th and it came with 4.0.2. I was able to update to 4.1 with TU and preserve my baseband

there are many people who get iphone 4 as their upgrade on AT&T accounts , just to sell it and make few $$$ , and keep using their old phones
