I've learned that, in my case at least, it seems that sent messages are archived by default and never deleted, but 'trashed' received messages are deleted permanently after a month. That's fine and all, but one thing I noticed is that if I have a message that I've 'trashed', and then try to save it by archiving it in the mail app, it's deleted?! This has happened to me twice now, fortunately with nothing too serious. But the emails I tried to save are no longer discoverable, so I'm assuming they're gone.

My questions are: what am I misunderstanding? Why does the Mail app's "archive" button delete these emails?

To anyone helping: Firstly, thanks! But I just want us to be clear on the usage of the words trashed, deleted, archived. I tried to specify above, but the main thing to be aware of is the auto-archive of gmail messages within the Mail app, and the actual "Archive" button in the mail app. I tried to use trashed as "deleted", and deleted as actually 100% deleted...
