It looks like iPhone 14 will finally have Always On Display. But can someone explain why is it useful?

I have my phone in my pocket most of the day when I’m out. I won’t see the screen.

I have phone in a charging dock away from me when I’m home. I won’t see it.

I have my phone in front of my face when I am using it. I won’t need always On.

I love the AOD on my watch because I can tell time without turning my wrist.

But why is it good for a phone?

I don't want AOD.
Just click on sleep button and I can tell you what time is it.

I'm not getting the iPhone 14, but I do have the Pixel 3a XL which has AOD.

Not everyone shares your lifestyle. I work from home and when not at work am frequently online. So, collectively I spend over 12 hours in front of a computer. For every minute of those hours, my iPhone(s) are sitting on my desk with my primary phone in a business card holder. When I go to bed, the phone sits on my nightstand in a business card holder.

So for the majority of the day, my iPhone is next to me, not in a pocket or on a charger (only at night). That's entirely different to what you do. AOD is therefore a useful thing for me.

Before the pandemic, this was still a thing, only my iPhone sat in a business card holder on my desk at work. Different locale, but same thing.

Only Apple users will actively desire less features on a device that costs an arm and a leg. If you don't like a feature just turn it off LOL.

Also for anyone saying it will kill battery life or disturb you at night, the screen refresh rate will most certainly be 1Hz and almost every AOD in the market has near-zero backlight illuminating it. Just look at any half decent Android phone and you'll understand. It is inherently designed to be non-intrusive until you choose to look at it.

It’s not earth shattering, but I think I will like it when I do end up upgrading. It will look cool even just as a photo frame on someone’s desk when they want it, or a calendar/reminder setup. At the gym one maybe can always see a countdown or rest timer ticking off seconds with a 1Hz refresh, assuming it works in apps or the complications for that come along (this works well on my watch, but if I’m holding something heavy or climbing I can’t always see it and people like putting their phone out in front to see the timers). The more features and customizations the better. I’m sure people can be creative and find uses for almost every lifestyle. If they hate it, I hope they can toggle it off.

I have it on my Samsung and it can be turned off completely or scheduled to turn off at bedtime.

It’s nice to see two time zones and missed notifications and it would be nice if my iPhone has it too, however it’s not a dealbreaker.

For me to glance at my phone to see if I’ve missed anything or even to tell me how much battery I would have left. Rather have these features than not.

I enjoy it on my Apple Watch even with the bad battery life.

AOD is only news because it was never on an iPhone before.

Similarly, Apple could plan on bringing back the physical keyboard and still keep the 16X9 screen! Only Apple could do this by taking old tech and improving on it. The key thing here is that Apple’s keyboard is made from liqud metal! It will never dent or scratch! Only available on the Pro model and at an extra 500 dollar premium. Everyone will be able to see you bought the most expensive iPhone.

Kim Kardashian has already pre-ordered 20 of them!

Rejoice!

Phones in general just don't excite me anymore. The only exciting new thing that phones has introduced is foldable displays but they're clearly not ready for mass market yet with how easily they break and how expensive they are. Hell I didn't get a new iPhone for five years until the iPhone 13 Pro brought 120hz displays.

The only thing that'll excite me now with the iPhone now would be the headphone jack coming back (I WILL FIGHT YOU ON THIS,) USB-C finally replacing lightning, or sideloading finally getting implemented to iOS.

You realize other people have different use cases from you?

My iPhone sits on my desk next to me while I'm working. It would be great to glance over and get some pertinent info from it without touching it.
It already does that if you have it unlocked. It's convenient yes, but worth buying a whole new $1000 phone for? PFFFT god no! This ain't like the always on display of the Apple Watch, a device that actually has a reason to be always on since it's a watch.

i couldn't care less, have my Apple Watch for glancing at the time and notifications. But it can be very useful for people without an Apple Watch that just want to glance at the time or some data from the lock screen widgets while their phone is on their desk and they're doing something else.

What does "unlocked" have to do with it?
