Can anyone help me with this issue?

I'm not sure what is causing such a problem with this Imessage thing. I am hoping that this 8.1 software update will help me out. I made the mistake the first time I set my phone up by auto signing into my AppleID with my phone so I'm assuing it automatically linked my phone number to it. This time I didn't do that. With that being said I have done the steps to get my phone number not linked with my apple ID. I am still having issue if I turn Imessage off for my friends with Iphones to get their messages to me. It will still tell them it was delivered as an imessage even if they have it set to send as a text message automatically. Somehow Imessage servers are not recognizing when I turn my imessage off. I've tried talking to apple care which is effing usless because all I get is well iphones aren't made to send text messages to iphones...uh they are freaking phones of course they are made to send text messages. You choose to send Imessages it's an optional service. So they won't help me because they basically call me stupid for wanting to not use Imessage.
