The Verge updated their website today. They took everything that I used to love about it and turned it into a hot mess. Does anyone have a good alternative general tech website that they recommend? I'm looking for something that is similar to how their website used to be. Something easy on the eyes and easy to read with a good mix of tech related articles.

Never read The Verge. I like Tom's Hardware. They have general tech news and in depth articles. Although they are focused mainly on computers and the computer industry. They do stray into phones and other areas. Their forums are also good.

If you want more focus on IT. Look at Tom's IT Pro. For gadgets, look at Tom's Guide.

Tomshardware forums are also an excellent resource for questions and answers.

Love me some techmeme dot com . . . comprehensive, but it may rankle you a bit if you favour lots of whitespace ;)

ArsTechnica and Anandtech.
In this order.
Other websites simply do not exist in my eyes compared to their quality.

I literally just came here to post about what a dumpster fire the new website is. I don’t know what their designers were thinking but it’s utterly unreadable. Horrible fonts, so much empty space, terrible colors. I don’t mind change but the self aggrandizing post as to why they changed the site just turned me completely off.

I love ArsTechnica and Engadget and find there’s overlap between them and The Verge. Just be aware that The Verge is owned by Vox Media, which has an independent streak. On the other hand ArsTechnica is owned by Condé Nast and Engadget by Yahoo (and formerly AOL and Verizon). So consider biases accordingly.

While technically its not a website for news, I do find the content from GamerNexus useful, helpful and informative.
I find the testing they do is pretty much high quality. Their YTs can tend to be a bit long winded, but they're broken up by chapters so I can just skip the sections I'm not interested.

Ars was one of the best up until the pandemic, when it rapidly disassembled into a deep left bias and virtue signaling site favouring and infusing social commentary into everything, which also coincided with the technical content getting thinner and more superficial.

Anandtech is probably the best currently.

Two years later, I’m curious if any of you that disliked the verge redesign are still avoiding it?

I've only been there a handful of times since. I mainly check here, Engadget and YouTube for tech news. Used to daily drive The Verge up until the website change occurred.

I used to like CNET but when they did their makeover I just stopped visiting. Not sure why but the site just does not "vibe" with me and really hate browsing the homepage. Generally just use Engadget for the basic headline stuff

I never visit the CNET website but I watch their videos on YouTube quite often. I also have a soft spot for Bridget Carey.

Anandtech was a place I frequently visited, especially when I was looking for hardware specs and comparisons for new builds. I will miss that website for sure.
