Perhaps I am buying overly curious, but what is wrong with the built in SD card slot?

If you want to use it for reading micro SD, just use one of those adapters.

yes, I have the 11.6" which lacks SD card slot. I forgot to mention that when I posted the question.

Smallest isn't necessarily the best.

I prefer the card readers with a short pigtail cable like this one over the one-piece models like this or this.

Why? The ones with a short cable give more flexibility in tight areas.

The one-piece models often interfere with access to adjacent ports.
