There's a WiFi connection in some of the BART stations here in San Francisco. The WiFi icon looks normal while waiting in the stations, but it changes to something else when the trains start moving.

It's the one on the far left. Can someone tell me what the hell it means?

You're connected to a network being created by a computer rather than a wifi point. It's useful for sharing stuff, if you want to.

Yup. It's called an ad hoc or peer-to-peer network. You can create one yourself with Airport. I use it regularly for training to share out my MB instead of fighting with various campus IT departments.

Looks like internet sharing is turned on.

Turn off/on:
System Prefs > Sharing > Internet Sharing

Good grief.

The icon indicates that you are connected to another computer via a peer to peer network as has been stated several times above.

Via this peer to peer network other connectivity may be made available to you, such as access to files and to the internet. This however is not what the icon means.

It means you are connected to another computer via a wireless peer to peer network.

Cue pigeon english txtspk drivel..
