They wouldn't even need towers... Apple would create a new technology that doesn't require towers or having to wait a few months after MMS and Tethering are released before supporting it.

Every major Apple product has a 6 page complaint list on macrumors.

Do you really want to be forced to use a mobile provider with such a complaint list? It would probably lack voice, and text messaging because all you need is email and iChat.

Also, Apple probably doesn't think you need reception if you live outside a major city.

Apple Cell Network

It would cost 2-3 times as much as any of the competitors, but it would "just work," in the same way that MobileMe "just worked." Just don't be one of the first to sign up and you'll be just fine.

According to early reports, Apple indeed originally discussed becoming a MVNO for the iPhone. Basically, reselling carrier services as their own.

Then they came to their senses and realized that carriers are always blamed when there's no coverage, or there's problems.

So Apple decided to be smart and just make the phone itself.

Thus they could continue to look good while their chosen carrier(s) might not.

Why would Apple deal with the hassle? Apple has a great setup. They design the phone, contract a manufacturer to build the pieces of the phone, and contract a telcom to provide service for the phone. All Apple has to do is slap the thing together and sell it. Great business model.

Apple is in the computer hardware business, not the telcom business. Why would Apple subject itself to the same whining and crying AT&T gets?

LOL....yeah, time has proven over and over that nothing works better than a self-righteous monopoly! Go for it, even AT&T would look good up against that!

If Apple ran their own mobile network, you would still be charged for upgrading in contract!

The towers would probably be made of clear plastic. Wouldn't work very well. Stick with ATT.
