Can apple store add to ATT family plan?

One of my family members is attempting to get the iPhone in store tomorrow. I plan to add them to a family plan (I am currently on individual plan). If I go with them will Apple be able to do it or do I need to get the phone from ATT instead?

This is not correct. I added a line to a family plan at the Apple store on the launch day of the iPhone 4.

Or you can even purchase the phone separately then call ATT and they can add that line to your family plan.
