can Apple Watch 7 survive an hour or so in a sauna or steam room? (followed by a quick dunk in cold water, like in a lake)

Very true. It's not uncommon for people to report leaks after they wear real dive watches rated to 300, 600 or more meters in the shower. The AW obviously isn't rated for anything near that kind of pressure. Warm temps will loosen seals and o-rings and the moisture is very likely to get into the watch.

I've worn mine in hot tubs, no issues. For what it's worth, Apple Watches have also been used in space.

IMO, they can survive harsh conditions but others are right that theoretically the seals can weaken... I've personally never heard of it happening though.

Always worn my AW in my hot tub - max temp is normally 40 degrees C (104 F)...but being the UK that drops rather quickly with the hydro jets on :)

Had the hot tub for about 4 years now and my S3, S4 & S5 have all survived.

Never had an issue (yet) with my AW...though I have my S5 now as my spare for workouts and hot tub etc.

I would not recommend using it in combination with hydro jets as it can press tiny bits of moisture under the display. I had the same setup damaging the display, where the OLED pixel died one by one over a few days until only a small display corner was left without any other visible damage on the outside of the display glass. Luckily it was Care+ protected…
