I am curious to know if you wear the watch and leave the phone in your room, and walk around the house, will it keep track of steps, calories, activity levels, etc? Or do you need to have both the watch and iphone on you for it to work?

It will track your steps, calories, and activity levels. It will also estimate distance. Accurate distance needs the iPhone.

As I understand it, you need to calibrate the watch first by accumulating 20 mins worth of GPS running/walking. The watch uses this to work out your stride length etc to more accurately calculate calories when you don't have your iPhone with you. I know mine has still calculated calories/movement etc when the iPhone has been in a separate room of the house, although im not sure how accurate it has been as I hadn't calibrated it until yesterday.
