Can I allocate a certain amount of space to Time Machine?

Can I allocate a certain amount of space to Time Machine? or Can I tell it to only keep the backups for a certain amount of time? I want to do this because I don't want time machine taking up my whole external hard drive.

You can reformat the drive into two partitions. Otherwise, no. Time Machine will eventually fill up whatever partition you tell it to use.
