I go to japan alot (monthly) and have been using my iphone on a roaming service in japan. How can I use my japan ntt docomo SIM and configure to receive and check my emails?

If you want to use docomo SIM in your at&t iphone - you have to unlock it first. Unlocking is not for everyone, it is a long painful process and you need to unlock after every OS update. I'd suggest you get international iPhone sim card.
A friend of mine used in his *LOCKED* AT&T iPhone international sim card from these guys - iphone****.com which is said to work in 140 countries and is pretty cheap.

Not a long painfull process. You can jailbreak it with a single click of your mouse.
Then in less than a minute you can install blacksnow to unlock it.

Then you can pick up a local simcard with data, texts or whatever you need and use that instead.

Also stop trying to advertise whatever site you're trying to push on every post or you'll be banned.
