Can I buy a Verizon iPhone 6 and use it on AT&T?

I won't be eligible for an upgrade until February, but my parents have Verizon. Would I be able to purchase an iPhone 6 through their plan and then use it on AT&T to get around the early upgrade? I've read that Verizon's phones are unlocked, is that right? Are there any extra hoops I have to jump through besides just putting in my AT&T sim card in and activating?

Yes the 6 & 6 Plus Verizon are all sold carrier unlocked and will work on GSM networks including At&T & T-Mobile etc
