Can I "buy" an app before having the device?

I was reading TUAW's appstore round up, and seeing that some Apps were on sale (or free) for periods of time, and since I don't actually have my iPad yet, I wondered if there was some way I could "buy" them on my iTunes account, and then download them onto my device, once I buy it?

Hope that makes some kind of sense?
