Can I buy an iphone in Japan (for Australian use)

This might be a stupid question but I just want to be certain. I will be in Japan during September & October, so I assume that this will be during the release of the iPhone 5. Will I be able to buy an iPhone 5 in Japan, put in my SIM from my iPhone 4 and then use it once I return to Australia? In other words, are they the same phone? Would it be of any benefit to wait until I return to Australia to purchase the phone?

If you buy it factory unlocked, then yes.
