two ways you can do it if it's within 30 days.
1. take it into a store for inspection
2. call apple to purchase applecare, they will run a remote run a diagnostic on it. (gift usage not sure)

I just did the diagnostic test on line and everything came back fine, but when you get to check out the apple care plan you want, its only for credit card info, no gift card option. sucs !

I purchased Apple Care at an Apple store w/gift cards for A fully paid iPhone. That’s how I got around the 8 card limit. Two separate transactions.

Yeah, specialists aren't supposed to combine cards. Kinda crazy but the people scamming gift cards with stolen cards is surprising high.
