I want to upgrade the OS on a 2008 iMac. However, I have iLife 2008, which is not supported in ML. So I'd have to spend money to upgrade both the OS and iLife. Can I still get Lion or do I have to get ML?

You can't DL Lion from the App store any longer, but other users here have reported they called Apple and were able to purchase Lion.
Lion via phone
You can purchase Lion if you call Apple directly. 800-MY-APPLE. Pay over the phone and they email you a link and passcode to download from App Store. It took 2 days to get my email link. Not sure why such a delay, but just letting you know.
