Can I change my default DVD player to an external DVD drive

Our internal DVD drive is broken, supposedly a common thing with the MacBook Pro. But now I have RosettaStone, and when it searches for the language DVD, it is only searching the internal drive. So it doesn't think the CD exists. Is there a way to make the external drive the default drive on the MacBook Pro. Running on Lion, Version 10.7.4.
