I dragged and dropped a link to a favorite website onto my 24" iMac desktop. The icon it chose is so generic: @ HTTP. I would love to change that icon to something else but I can't find the right search term to find out how to do it or it can't be done? Which is it? Can I do it? How do I do it?

Hi,

yes it can be done.

1) Open the icon you would like to have in Preview
2) Select everything (command-A) and copy it
3) Do "Get Info" on the .webloc file
4) click on the little icon (the generic http icon) in the upper left corner (you'll see a frame around it)
5) press command-V

Hope this does it for you.

Yes!!

Yes!! Oh, thank you! That's the exact thing I needed. Thanks again.:D

Copy/Paste doesn't change the icon for me.

That seems like an elegant solution, I'm trying it on Snow Leopard 10.6.7 but without success.

I tried copying/pasting as Groovee suggested.

The icon in Get Info does highlight blue, and the filesize of the the .webloc file DOES increase to reflect the image information, but it doesn't display the image as the icon on the desktop.

Sef.

Doesn't work

As the user above said, the icon doesn't change. The file size changes but the icon still shows a generic jpeg image evan though the image I dragged over (copy/paste) is ICNS. Any suggestions?

Use the instructions in the link I posted. If you follow those directions exactly, it will work every time.
