Can I check lock status by calling Apple Store and giving my device's serial number?

I have the serial number from Apple's support profile website (of my ordered iphone 5s tmobile contract free unit).

Can I use the serial number to find out if the phone is factory unlocked or not?

That's asking for an IMEI number not serial.

If you bought it as a "contract free unit" why would it not be?
