Can I delete the MoblieSync folder in my Library folder

I am trying to save some space on my iMac. The MobileSync folder in the Library folder is 85.5 GB. I know that this is my iPhone back up. Bit if i delete it, will iTunes just start over fresh or would this be a bad idea?
