I tried searching around for an answer but came up empty.... I'm wondering if it's possible to disable the sound my new iMac makes on start up. It's not a big deal as I mostly use sleep/wake when the computer is not in use but on those days when I actually have to power off and reboot it would be nice to have a silent start up.

Thanks.

Mute before shutdown or this: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16425

StartupSound.prefPane is the software which controls the volume of the startup sound of your Macintosh computer. StartupSound.prefPane mute the startup sound without changing the output volume setting. And StartupSound.prefPane limits the startup volume so that it may not become loud even if you make the output volume louder. To set up the startup volume, you select the "Startup Sound" pane added to the "System Preferences."

Thanks for the quick reply. The muting would do the trick but unfortunately I'm usually not the one powering down (wife also uses this computer) and she usually forgets to sleep instead of shut down, so I'm guessing muting will also be forgotten. The app in the link sounds like it might do the trick though. I think I'll give it a try.

Thanks!!
