Can I download applications from my iBook G4 to my iPhone?

I recently bought an iPhone 3GS and was wondering if I can download applications (such as Dictionary/Thesaurus, for example) from my laptop to my phone. I know that I can download applications from the AppStore, but I figure why bother if I don't have to. If it's possible, would someone please show me how to do it? I don't see the available options when I connect my phone to my laptop and iTunes comes up. Thanks.
