Hi,

My cousin-in-law recently gave me his old iPhone after he upgraded to a new 3GS. As far as I can tell, it's 1st generation, 8GB, firmware 1.1.4. Previously, it was used as a full-capacity iPhone (phone, Edge, etc.). Currently, it's unlocked but has no SIM card. All previous content and settings have been erased.

So far, using WiFi, I've successfully added my Gmail account to Mail, surfed the internet with Safari, tried out Maps, Youtube, etc. I haven't yet plugged it into iTunes (I heard that might cause the phone to reset, requiring re-activation via a cellular service).

At this stage, given that I already have a cellphone and received the iPhone for free, I'm quite happy to use it as an iPod Touch. The only drawback at this stage is that I can't seem to download more apps. There's a link on the iPhone's homepage for iTunes, but not for the App Store.

My question is: Is it even possible to download more apps without a SIM card? If so, how? Do I need to sync the thing with iTunes for the App Store link to show up?

Also, I have an iBook running OS/X 1.3.9. Will it even recognize the iPhone?

Thanks in advance for any help or feedback!

To get the app store you will need to update to newer firmware. if your mac can run the latest version of itunes then it shouldnt have a problem syncing/updating the iphone.

Having no sim card in will not affect any of the above.
