Can I drag and drop photos and video files from iPhone to an external drive using iPhone Mirroring?

Hi, does the iPhone Mirroring function work with only internal drive or both internal and external drives? Any disadvantage in using this method to copy photo and video files from an iPhone to a drive connected either internally or externally to the Mac?
