effecting the rest of the partitions on an external HD? The reason I'm asking this is because I want to create a new partition but when I adjust the size and create it, it says I have files in it. But when I click on the partition in Finder, there is nothing appearing in the partition. I want to create a partition for the Lion up-loader so I don't have to keep downloading it for all of my macs but uncomfortable about moving forward.

Yes, if you click the volume in disk utility and go to the erase tab you can erase the data in that volume without affecting the other partitions on the HDD.

Ok cool, but why is there data in the first place if its a fresh new partition? When I right-click on the partition for More Info, it says that there are files but when I simply click on the partition. there is nothing that appears there.

Maybe system files that don't appear in finder? I'm not sure about that one
