Can I erase pictures from my HD after backed up?

Once my HD os backed up my an external hard drive, can I go head and erase the ones on my HD?

yes, you could do that, but then the point of the back-up thus becomes pointless cos you still only have one copy. There is a saying, in the digital industry for the most part at least, that something doesnt *exist* until its in at least 3 different places/mediums/volumes (insert as you wish)
