Hey guys. I currently have a family plan at $60 with an iPhone (So Data plan, + $30) and an additional line for a cheap flip phone (+ $10). My monthly bill is ~$100. By the way I'm in California with AT&T.

Anyways, I bought my iPhone 3G in September of last year so I am not eligible for an upgrade. I need to add a new phone line soon to get my brother a cell phone. I was wondering if it would be possible to buy the iPhone 3GS at the advertised price of $199 (for the 16 GB of course) as long as I add it as an additional line, and I assume I will have to extend the contract another 2 years which I do not mind.

However, this would mean that I would have to pay $10 more for the additional phone line and $30 more for the data plan. What I want to do is disable the data plan on my iPhone 3G and give that to my brother, and keep the iPhone 3GS with its data plan. This would mean that I would only have to pay the extra $10 for the additional phone line.

I am wondering if this is possible. I am under the impression that it is indeed possible to buy the iPhone 3GS at the advertised price as long as it is added as an additional line on your plan. What I'm not sure about, however, is whether or not I can cancel my current data plan for the iPhone 3G. I've read mixed reports, but many reports say that it is indeed possible as long as you insist (They will tell you the phone 'wont work' without the data plan, etc.).

I already know that I will lose visual voice mail and internet when I am not at a WiFi spot, I don't mind. My brother will be more than glad to have a phone at all.

So is this possible? Has anyone else tried this method? Thanks guys I appreciate the responses.
