Can I get AppleCare for Old Macbook?

I am possibly buying a second hand late 2008 Unibody Macbook and was wondering if its possible to buy AppleCare for it incase its goes kaput in the next year or two?

You can only buy AppleCare when the machine is under 1 year old. Third-party warranties may be available.
