Can I jailbreak?

I have iTunes 9.1(79) on my MBP.
I have an iPhone 3G with 3.1.3 (7E18).

I also have a wifi iPad, and the only reason I am really interested in jail breaking the iPhone is for tethering.

Can I do this? Sorry if this has been answered a thousand times...I have no experience with it, and find lots of posts confusing at this point. Thanks for any help.

you can jailbreak your iphone 3g with redsnow and the ipad need to wait for couple days
