I need to wipe my external drive that has my TM backup on it so I can create enough room to add a partition (won't work now because of fragmentation I guess). Can I just drag my Backups.backupdb folder to my desktop, wipe the drive and move it back again? Will this destroy the 'hard links' (I think that is what they are called).

It may have been a moot point anyway because I tried to copy it to my imac computer while I was waiting for a reply and my Western Digital drive seems to have gone to sleep in the middle of the copy. stuck on "Preparing to copy 97,531 items."

Now the HD will not eject and I cannot stop the copy process. Any ideas other than just unplugging the drive?
