Can I make a MAC NTFS HDD bootable

I have a backup of a minimac on a external HD - but it is formatted NTFS and my MacBook Pro won't see it as bootable - is there a way to reformat the drive or re-partition without erasing any of the data to make this a bootable drive

No, you need to reformat the external HDD using GUID as partition map scheme and HFS+ (Mac OS Extended as file system). There is no way around this. Reformatting that external HDD will delete all data on the external HDD.
