can i make VLC the default player for all avi files?

get info for any avi file, and where it reads "open with" choose vlc. below will be a button to use that app to open all files of that type.

You can change the default app for any file type in OS X. Just open the info window for any file of that type (Command-i) and then change the "Open with" and hit "Change All".

EDIT: siurpeeman beat me to it. And even has visuals. Show off! :p

Right-click on an AVI file. Go to "Get info" on that window - the "open with" Tab - select Open with: VLC.app -- then "Use this application to open all documents like this." -- click "Change All..."

Damn, I'm too slow!

Slurpee - are you proving that Skitch is the fastest app for quick edits? Because that looks like a Skitch-flavored callout arrow.

this is driving me crazy, it is exactly what I do but everytime it goes back to quick time (it actually keeps the setting for the only file I selected) - of course I do click "change to all" when I'm asked...what's wrong?

I've read this thread a thousand times done everything it says including the disk utility permissions repair thing and still can't understand why VLC doesn't become my default player with ALL of my .avi files. it only changes it for the specific file that i select. like i wouldn't mind if i had to do it for each file type but each individual file is just annoying. help would be very appreciated.

And you've been sure to click "Change All" in the "Get Info" window, right?
