I have a 20 gig folder that I access quite often. I want the folder visually on my desktop, but I want the files themselves on my external drive nis there a way to do this, similar to shortcuts with window? Thanks!

The equivalent of Windows shortcuts is called an alias. The shortcut to make one is Cmd + L or you can find it in the File menu in Finder when you have a file or folder selected.

Copy or move the folder where you like, create the alias, then move the alias to where you like. You can also drag the folder to the dock for easy access as well, provided it sits on the other side of the dividing line from where the apps sit.
