Can I move existing Time Machine backups to another drive?

Ok, so I am going to be purchasing a new laptop soon and have been using my Mac Mini for about 2 years now accumulating daily backups the whole time. When I get the new laptop I want to use it as my main computer and use the nice external I have to back it up. My Mini will go under my TV as a media center but I don't want to loose all the backups I already have with it.

Can I move all of those backups to a cheaper external drive?
Or do I just have to start a new series of backups and loose the old ones?


I only ask because with the backups going I was always less concerned with what I trashed because its easy to recover with TM, I'm not sure I want to loose them.
