I have a couple of 2TB external hard drives with USB 2.0 connectors. They
obviously require external power adapters to work.

Can I plug the hard drive into the iPad 2 and view/import photos directly?
(the hard drive contains only photos in hundreds of different folders) I have
the Apple camera connection USB/SD kit already, but have been too afraid to
try it....

Thanks for any info! :)

While I've not tried this, I think you can plug it in thru the camera connector kit and it will allow you to import pictures if they are in a folder on the drive named something similar to what a camera calls it's root directory such as DCIM etc.

Simple answer: no

I actually followed the direction in the post above and renamed the folders.

The strange thing is that not all external hard drives will work. (all have their
own power adapters and all use USB 2.0 connectors)

Seagate FreeAgent 1.5TB - not recognized, but does spin up upon connection

Seagate 2TB hard disk in Thermaltake hard drive dock - photo folder recognized

WD 2TB hard drive in same Thermaltake hard drive dock - not recognized

ancient(2000?) Maxtor 250GB externa hard drive - recognized, sees photo folder, but copy/import not possible
