can i put a 4tb sata 3.0 drive into a older external sata usb dock?

I have one of those chinese (red) etx USB docks that are compatible with sata 3.5/2.5 HDS, how ever they are normal USB 2.0 interfaces, can i put a 4TB sata 3.0 into it? are the 4TB sata 3 backwards compatible is what i am asking?

and will this work wiith my imac been a 2010 i7 model running 10.7.5 with older usb interfaces?

I'm not sure but if its new never used you could partion into 2 2gb or 4 1gb. My toshiba 3tb works fine in 10.7 and 8 and 9. So 2x2gb should work.

Or if tis not new then backup and then repartition. Actually mac is pretty neat you can partition the unused space without loosing any data in disk utility. But backup just to be safe.

my imac 2011 does not see it at all, i emailed seagate and they where not helpful, instead of answering my question as to if i needed a driver for the mac to see the drive they said they where sorry i was having problems with it and suggested i go to this windows driver page., they act like samsung.
