Can I put my SIM into the 1st Gen. iPhone and use it?

Planning to get a 1st Gen. iPhone and put my SIM card into the iPhone and using it as a regular phone (No DATA plan)...IS THIS POSSIBLE?

If I decide to get the DATA plan...would I be subjected to a contract?

I'm planning to get a iPhone from Craigslist and I had my SLVR over two years so I'm free to upgrade or flee to another carrier.

Any input will be appreciated...THANKS!!!

I don't think you would be tied into a contract if you were to add data. I am not sure if you SIM will work though (in theory it should). I don't have AT&T yet (7/11) so I am not 100%.

I think you have to activate the SIM with iTunes. That way the SIM is registered to that phone.
