Just got a 512GB SSD for Christmas :D Can I temporarily put it in my optical drive spot to clone my main drive it, then switch it over to the main drive slot and put the optical drive back?

Yes of course, but since you don't want the SSD banging around while you turn the computer over to fire it up and clone it. You'll need a cage.

A better idea I think is something like this

It doesn't require you to disassemble your computer to get access to the optical drive and it allows you to clone your drive.

OWC has it for 37 bucks, but I think newegg may have them for less.

To OP : don't you have a USB external enclosure, or an external drive that you could open to pull the HD out and replace with the SSD for the purpose of cloning ?

(this is what I would do).

My uncle has an enclosure but I want to put the drive in NOW and if I can get away with just plugging it in to the optical drive bay and wrapping it in paper or something so it doesn't flop I'd be fine with that.

Will the plug match up with no adapter?

Ah dangit I was half hoping that was referring to an enclosure or something.

Off to my uncle's.

Yes they are different as you can see in attached image
