Can I recover closed tabs after clearing my history in Safari if I have iCloud syncin

I cleared my history and website data on my iPhone in order to view a NYT article (stupid paywall...), not realizing that would get rid of all my open tabs. I have iCloud syncing with Safari on my Mac set up. Is there any way to recover my lost tabs, either on my iPhone or on my Mac?

Also, is there a better way to get around the stupid NYT paywall other than clearing my website data and losing all my open tabs and history?
