iPad Can I restore iPad backup to a iPad mini?

I'm about to sell my iPad (3rd gen) in prep for getting the new iPad mini. Before I wipe it for resale, is there any point in doing a back up? When I get the mini, can I use the iPad backup to restore from?

Great, I may end up setting it up as new, but its good to have the option.

back-up

you can back-up to the mini at any time. You can choose the back-up that you want. You can do a as new start, and if you don't like it you can restore from a earlier back-up.
