I had a problem with the screen flickering on my iPhone 5 so Apple sent me another one. Is it possible to still return under the 30 day policy even though the serial number doesn't match on the retail box? Thanks!!

I ordered online and had it replaced 2x in store. And returned it last Saturday no question. As long as you're within 30 days. By mail, I am not sure but I think that wouldn't be an issue because the system will show the serial # of the replacement phone and history.
