I would be most grateful if you can help me out here.

I have a Japanese DVD which has Japanese audio and English subtitles. I would like to rip this so I can watch it on my iPhone.

I've tried using Toast 9, which converts it to mp4, but it doesnt keep the subtitles.

Are there any free software packages that will allow me to do convert the DVD and keep the subtitles in there? Someone suggested to me that Handbrake might work, but if it did, it would take quite a long time to encode/convert, as it is quite slow?

I am looking for a piece of free software that is fairly quick, because I have an entire box set of these Japanese DVDs to dump onto my phone!

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
