My wife and I both now have iMacs. I've attached an external drive to my iMac, and I wondered if it's possible to share that external drive so my wife's iMac can see it for use with Time Machine for backup. We're both running off the same network (Time Warner Cable if that matters), and both our iMacs are in the same room, and use ethernet connections. Is this something that's possible to do?

AFAIK this is only possible with OS X Server or a Time Capsule.

You could *try* running the command below to enable unsupported network volumes as TM destinations, but I'm not sure if it works in the latest versions of OS X. YMMV.

Code:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
