Can I start a new account with AT&T when I preorder?

For reasons I won't go into, I'd like to just buy a new iPhone with a new plan on AT&T.

In past experience with preordering, has anyone been able to start a brand new account with AT&T when they go to preorder a new iPhone? Right now, it just seems to ask for your current carrier.

You might have to order directly from AT&T, not Apple.

Do they do a preorder any chance? May just go to the store on launch day...which is literally the worst.

For anyone wondering, I talked to Apple Support and supposedly you can start a new AT&T account when you preorder (and use AT&T Next to pay for the phone).

I am bumping this because Apple now is telling me you can't preorder a phone and start a new account as a new customer.
