Hey Guys,

I got a 2009 mac pro... 4,1.

Currently, it has a single 2.66 ghz quad core.

I just recently purchased 2x Intel Xeon Quad Core Processor X5365 @ 3.0GHz.

Can I install these directly into the logic board or do I need to put in some additional "riser"? The guy who sold it to me isn't sure if they're compatible with the computer in its current state. How might I find out?

Unfortunately they won't work, I don't think.

Even disregarding potential software problems, the hardware won't fit together. The Intel 5300 series used an LGA771 socket, whereas the 4,1 has an LGA1366 socket.

The stock 2.66GHz quad was a w3520 I believe; there is a brief overview of all the different Xeons at Wikipedia. For reference, the most advanced chip anyone has put in a 4,1 quad is the W3690 (two tables down from the link), whilst the W3680 is a more common upgrade (better value).

Cheers
