If I switch it will the phone automatically work? If I do that will I have to pay for the data plan? Because I don't want texting, or internet. I only want to call on the iPhone. I don't have the money to buy a new phone so I'm gunna have to use my mom's old iPhone first gen because my xenon broke.

It would depend on who your carrier is. Users have reported that AT&T has automatically added a data plan to iPhone users. I would suggest you call your service provider and put a block on data. Do this with another phone, and then insert the sim into the iPhone. You can use the same sim, no problems.
I have a gophone service and I switched from my Xenon and bought an 1G iPhone. I had to unlock it first in order to use the GoPhone service. If you already have AT&T then it will work. Just pop in your SIM card and turn it on.
